TV Buying to Become More Digital, Forrester's Glantz
CHICAGO -- GRPs are starting to become the norm for online buying, but TV will also begin to use more digital metrics in media buying and planning, says Michael Glantz, analyst with Forrester Research. Beet.TV contributor Ashley Swartz spoke to Glantz at the Beet.TV Advertising Leadership Summit in Starcom's Chicago offices for a discussion of Forrester's recently-released report on the role of GRPs in digital media. "Anyone who wants to play in cross-platform media planning will have to use GRPs...even though most people know the GRP is inadequate," Glantz tells Beet.TV. That's why other forms of measurement such as cross-platform reach, engagement across screens, and set-top box data will become more important for marketers to augment their TV buys. "You will see TV get more digital. You are seeing specific TV data sets emerge to make TV smarter," he says in this video interview. When assessing campaigns, marketers will look at GRPs to validate the campaign, but at other forms of measurement to determine the effectiveness, he says. He adds that he doesn't expect addressable TV to have a huge impact on the TV ad market because the opportunity doesn't extend much beyond local operators.

Beet Retreat, "The Consummate Anti-Conference" Set for Vieques: Rob Norman, GroupM's Global Chief Digital Officer to Keynote
I am pleased to announce Beet Retreat 2013, a two-day conference on the state of digital video at the W Retreat and Spa on the Caribbean island of Vieques on February 1 and 2. Our keynote speaker this year will be Rob Norman, Chief Global Digital Officer of GroupM, Worldwide the media buying unit of WPP. This is our second year organizing this invitation-only event. You can find videos from our last event, held in March, right here. The program will be limited to 30 participants. Each speaker will have the opportunity to be part of one of several panels and/or be interviewed on-site. The panels will be taped and published on Beet.TV and throughout our syndication network. The event will be both a comprehensive exploration of our fast-changing industry as well as an extraordinary networking opportunity with the top publishers, network executives, journalists, investors, technologists and advertising executives from around the globe. The programming will break into three tracks: digital video monetization; the technology of distribution and the future of content creation around entertainment and journalism. Helping moderate will be Jason Pontin, editor-in-chief and publisher of MIT's Technology Review. We are pleased to have MIT's venerable publication as our media partner. Pontin helped moderate last year. Here is what he says about the program: "If you want to understand how online video is being transformed by new technologies and business models, you need to join Andy Plesser at his Beet Retreat in Vieques. You'll hear from the innovators and business leaders who are driving the future of online video—at the beautiful W resort—and return home with fresh insights to apply to your own ventures." Jason Pontin, CEO and editor in chief, MIT Technology Review Here are more testimonials from last year's attendees: "The Beet.TV retreat in Vieques is the consummate anti-conference. A small group of senior executives all of whom touch the online video industry gather in a beautiful setting to discuss the future. Long lasting friendships are formed. GO!" Joy Marcus, Partner, Draper Fisher Jurvetson (New York) "Joining Andy Plesser's Beet.TV retreat, away from where events usually take place, was a great experience. It entailed an intimate and unique forum of top digital executives, the right blend of bigger companies and smaller startups, a well defined agenda -- which all around -- turned into a top notch experience. People shared, exchange thoughts, debated and had a great time. Taboola will be there next year." -- Adam Singolda, CEO Taboola (New York) "The Beet Retreat is unlike any conference you have been too. Enjoy fantastic food, breathtaking views and stimulating conversation with some of the best thought leaders in the media industry. Leave your business cards at home and be prepared to make new friends." Lippe Oosterhoff, CEO Livestation (London) The conference begins on Friday, February 1, and ends on Saturday evening. Spouses, partners or traveling pals are welcome to attend the two extraordinary dinners and other activities. We can accomodate kids too. There is a registration fee of $950. If you would like to suggest a participant, please email us at info(at)beet.tv About Vieques and the Event Vieques is an amazing place, certainly worth a few extra vacation days if possible. It was just named the top Caribbean Island by Travel & Leisure magazine. For a flavor of the island, please watch my video of the island's wild horses eating mangoes at the top of this page. Below is a photo montage of the March event. Logistics and Transportation Attendees need to fly to San Juan International. There are many direct flights from U.S. cities via JetBlue, Delta, Continental, American and others. From Europe, there are direct flights from London Gatwick (BA) and Madrid (Iberia). Prices right now, from New York to San Juan, are relatively low but will go up. Vieques is about 25 minutes by a small prop engine plane from San Juan International. The plane tickets are about $200 roundtrip. We recommend Cape Air, Vieques Airlink and Seaborne. There is also a ferry which is located in Fajardo, about a 1:15 drive, $75 cab ride from the airport. The ferry is $2.00. Hotels and other Lodging The W is providing participants with a room discount. They are holding rooms for us at a special room rate of $299 per night. This discounted rate must be booked by December 1. There are small, less pricey inns and guest houses, which we recommend. Also, if you are a family or coming with another couple, renting a house is an option. Some places we suggest are: Malacon House, modern guest house in Esperanza Hix Island House, high design ecotourism Hacienda Tamarindo, old fashion Caribbean inn Casa Casadas, small and dramatic b&b Villa Venti, small, modern and cool b&b You can find a number of houses for rent on VRBO.

BlackBerry 10 L-Series phone surfaces in yet more leaked images
We may still be a couple of months away from its long-awaited release, but RIM's first BlackBerry 10 smartphone certainly doesn't seem to be shy of the cameras in the interim. Just last week, some photos turned up on the CrackBerry forums that offered a clear look at the new L Series model next to a BlackBerry Bold, and now another batch of images have made a brief appearance on Twitter before being promptly removed. Those latest, first spotted by TechSuplex, are unfortunately of the BlurryCam variety, but they do show the phone from a variety of angles, and the device in question was said to boot up in a snappy eight seconds. As CrackBerry notes, they also appear to be relatively recent, with the device sporting the new style icons that were just revealed this month. Hit the links below for a closer look.

Must See HDTV (November 26th - December 2nd)
It's that time friends, the weekend when we say goodbye to the college football regular season. While there's plenty of NBA, college basketball, college hockey, and NHL action to tide us over, it just won't be the same until the bowls get into full swing. TNT is bringing back a couple of shows from fall hiatus, and we've got a few Blu-ray 3D titles hitting shelves. Look below for the highlights this week, followed after the break by our weekly listing of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and videogames.
The Walking Dead
After an often lackluster second season (until the finale), AMC's hit show has been firing on all cylinders since then and we're actually disappointed that we're wrapping up the first half of season three so soon. Between goings-on at the jail and in town, there's sure to be plenty of action, people choosing sides and, oh yeah, zombies.
(AMC, December 2nd, 9PM)
College Football
This weekend the college football regular season comes to a close, with several conference championships and a couple of other rivalry games that will play into bowl selections. We'll find out who will be joining Notre Dame in the Championship Game once the SEC title has been awarded, and where everyone else is going Sunday night. Whether you love the current system or love to hate it, cherish it, since after next year we're going to a playoff and fans will have to be angry about a slightly different set of circumstances.
MLS Cup
While much of the news is about David Beckham's departure from MLS after this weekend, there's still a game to be played. LA takes on Houston Saturday afternoon, so if you prefer your football played mostly with one's feet, you know where to tune in.

How to Add RAM to Your Laptop
One of the best ways to perk up the performance of an older laptop is by increasing its memory. Most of the time, the process of adding RAM is little harder than changing a light bulb. But not every laptop is easy to upgrade, and some modern thin-and-light units can't be upgraded at all?you have to buy the laptop with as much memory as you expect to need for its lifetime. Here's a primer to upgrading your laptop with additional RAM.
Can You Upgrade?
The first thing to do when you're considering a memory upgrade is to verify that your laptop supports it. Then you need to determine how much memory you can add. Typically your BIOS and motherboard constrain the amount of RAM that you can add to your laptop. Every model is different, so consult your user's guide, search the Web, and read up on your laptop's specs at the vendor's website to figure out whether you can safely increase the amount of memory on your machine. While you're doing this research, identify the steps involved in opening your laptop case and swapping out the memory modules safely.
Next, you need to investigate how your currently installed memory is configured across the slots. For example, your laptop may have only two memory slots, both containing 256MB modules to achieve your system's current 512MB capacity. To get to 1GB, you would have to buy two 512MB modules. Alternatively, you might have a single 512MB module and an empty memeory slot, in which case you would need to add a second 512MB module to reach 1GB.
Last but not least, you need to know the type of memory that your laptop uses?PC133, DDR, DDR2, DDR3, or whatever?and its speed. Your laptop's documentation should contain this info, but you can also find it on the startup screen. If you don't see it, try pressing the Pause, Break, or Tab key while your system is booting, to freeze the boot or show the boot info. You can also find the memory type in the BIOS. Most often, you must press Delete, F2, or another function key early in the boot process in order to enter the BIOS.

Georges St-Pierre talks about how he was ?obsessed? after loss to Matt Serra
In 2006, Georges St-Pierre won the UFC welterweight championship, then quickly lost it to Matt Serra. Getting the belt back became an obsession for GSP. He talks about that obsession, and talks through the rematch with Serra here.
By the time he steps into the cage to fight Carlos Condit on Saturday at UFC 154, 1,673 days will have passed since he beat Serra. He beat Jon Fitch, B.J. Penn, Thiago Alves, Dan Hardy, Josh Koscheck and Jake Shields to hold onto the shiny piece of metal and leather. Save the win over Penn, GSP didn't finish any of those fights. Still, he's dominated his division for four years. Will that domination continue this weekend? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Dailymotion Nearly Doubles Video Views in United States to 232 Million; 20% of Audience is Mobile
CHICAGO -- Video-sharing site Dailymotion has nearly doubled its video views in the United States over the last year, says Roland Hamilton, Managing Director, United States at Dailymotion. Beet.TV contributor Ashley Swartz spoke to Hamilton at the Beet.TV Advertising Leadership Summit in Starcom's Chicago offices about the company's growth and strategic plans in the next year. Dailymotion has grown to 232 milllion video views in the United States each month, up from 132 million a year ago, Hamilton says to Beet.TV. That's helping the company extend its roots deeper into the U.S. market, on top of its broad global footprint. The company reaches 110 million unique visitors worldwide watching 1.8 billion videos each month. Also, Dailymotion has benefitted from the consumer growth in mobile video usage; 20% of its audience is on mobile phones, Hamilton tells Beet.TV.As the site has upped its views, it's also expanded its ad strategy to encompass programmatic buying more as well as custom experiences for marketers. "Programmatic buying has its place and is really growing for us," Hamilton says. In addition, Dailymotion is building a studio in New York for branded entertainment, live programming and for its indie producers to use. Look for more live programming on the site in the future. Dailymotion played a part in the recent Virgin Mobile FreeFest concert, which it streamed earlier this month. That afforded a range of ad opportunities from home page takeovers to band playlists to social elements, Hamilton says.

Before you know it you'll be fighting for parking spaces, navigating unruly crowds, and taking elbow shots in the kidney trying to snatch up that Black Friday HDTV special. But when is the best time to risk life and limb and venture out into the overcrowded malls or maybe just spend hours hunched over your laptop searching out deals online?
[RELATED: 10 Black Friday deals available right now ]
If you're buying electronics this holiday season there are nine specific days you'll want keep your eye on, according to a new holiday gift guide from Savings.com. Some of the days Savings.com says to make note of on your calendar are obvious while others are a little less so. Whether you're a practiced hand at holiday gift shopping or need a few reminders, here's a breakdown of the days you're most likely to find deals on PCs, tablets, HDTVs, set-top boxes, and computer accessories.

The first five deals days should be pretty obvious to anyone familiar with the basic schedule for holiday deals.
