Troubleshooting unreliable wireless connections

Q. I have an older IBM Thinkpad T42 laptop running XP. The instability of the wireless drives me crazy to the point that I am considering throwing it in the trash. Sometimes the wireless works okay for a while, but often after 5 ? 10 minutes, I will lose the connection and get ?this connection has limited connectivity? and the connection endlessly tries to re-establish itself unsuccessfully. Using the ?repair connection? option in Windows has no effect. A reboot will restore the connection, but it usually will fail again in 5 ? 10 minutes.
