Hoffman: Even dogs deserve a bucket list

Last December, Jenny, a 6-year-old tan and white homeless pooch was brought to the Cocker Spaniel Rescue of East Texas. Karen Poe, a family lawyer in Houston and Cocker Spaniel Rescue volunteer, took Jenny home and became her "foster mom" until a permanent home could be found for the dog. [...] Poe took Jenny to a veterinarian, who checked out an unusual growth in her jaw. The tests came back bad news - Jenny had bone cancer. Poe decided to keep Jenny and make these final months memorable for the dog. Everybody at Cocker Spaniel Rescue pitched in ideas, and they came up with "Jenny's Doggie Bucket List": Ride the ferry in Galveston and play in the waves. Jenny enjoyed her spa day of beauty at Lone Star Pet Lodges, topped off with a delicious Frosty Paws frozen dessert. Photos of Jenny's Bucket List are posted on Cocker Spaniel Rescue's website at www.cocker kids.org. If Jenny starts to feel bad, we will stop the bucket list and get her to the doctor. Back in August 2007, my Pethouse Pet of the Week was a poodle named Fifi. Last November, when Madeleine's Alzheimer's became too much, and she could no longer live alone, she moved to a nursing home that welcomed doggy visitors. When she became too ill to walk him around the gardens, he lay quietly on her bed. "While cleaning out her townhouse, I found hundreds of hand-written notes tucked in every drawer," Mitcham said. On his first night with us, he helped himself to my dinner right off the table.
